Live sound performance by Gilles Aubry for field recordings and live electonics created for the Global Prayers project and premiered at LUFF Festival, Lausanne, October 2012.
Aubry improvises on a quadraphonic sound system using recordings that document a spiritual deliverance session at the Libambu Ministry Church in Kinshasa, DRC. During collective prayer sessions featuring glossolalia (speaking-in-tongues) and a massive PA system, church members confront evil spirits believed to cause various existential crises.
The resulting sound—overwhelming and heavily distorted—serves as a testament to both their perceived supernatural powers and their capacity for “soul amplification.” This performance challenges the listener to consider the parallels between the devotion of noise music culture and the ritualistic boundaries of faith, sonic intensity, and technology.
Also check Aubry’s CD/book “The Amplification of Souls” documenting the research.
